Spiritual Warfare

Can you pray with me today?  As departure draws closer (only 6 weeks now- woohoo!) I find myself struggling with some rough things during preparation.  Like the team and I discussed last week, distractions are huge for many of us as the final pieces and parts come together for this trip.  It’s a matter of spiritual warfare and I personally need some prayer warriors attacking this!

Since realizing he couldn’t prevent my obeying God’s command to go, it’s obvious that Satan has made it his goal to try every tactic imaginable to keep me from drawing close to the Lord in this time when I so desperately need Him to fill and equip me for the mission ahead.  Daily pressing me to compromise by choosing good things over best, I feel a strong temptation to shorten my quiet time each day to sleep later or work longer (see how his strategy works? making me think about how good it would feel to have a few extra bucks in my wallet for travel), also tricking me into believing things will be just fine if I put off preparing devotionals for another day because going out with friends (quality time, see? a good thing) and book reading (improving the mind through literature) are far more important now.

What a lie, though.

Today I dove deep into the Word in search of Truth.  Here’s what I discovered:

Temptation is not of God.

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. \\ James 1:13-15

God is faithful and provides a way of Escape through submission.

No temptation has overcome you that is not common to man.  God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. \\ 1 Corinthians 10:13

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. \\ James 4:7

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. \\ Philippians 4:13

God’s words are of greater worth than gold.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.  More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.  Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. \\ Psalm 19:7-11

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. \\ 2 Timothy 3:14-17

The Word is our armor, equipping us for battle against the tempter.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. \\ Hebrews 4:12

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel… \\ Ephesians 6:10-19

It is wise to prepare.

He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished. \\ Proverbs 28:19-20

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. \\ 2 Timothy 4:1-2

…In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. \\ 1 Peter 3:15a

Please join me in praying for the truth of God to fill our hearts and minds this summer.  Pray that we would daily hunger after the Word, be equipped with the armor of Christ to endure testing, ignore all distractions, and let the Spirit guide us to always choose what is best.

  1. Praying for you, Hannah! That passage from James is one of my favorites. Choosing the best over the good.
